In February 2019 I visited Hong Kong for the first time, staying 6 nights on Hong Kong Island.
This trip also gave me a chance to catch up with my cousin and her husband, and their three children.
I chose to stay at the Holiday Inn Express hotel, Causeway Bay.
It is centrally located, and nearby to Times Square and Hysan Place, the Causeway Bay MTR station, the Happy Valley tram loop is also one street away.
I made extensive use of the very efficient MTR (Mass Transit Railway) system.
Before I exited Hong Kong airport I purchased an Elder Octopus Card (similar to Sydney’s Seniors Opal Card). This card can be used on most trains, buses, ferries, trams, and many taxis.
It can also be used for purchases from vending machines and at a number of convenience stores, supermarkets and retailers. E.g.
7 Eleven, McDonalds, KFC, Subway, Starbucks, Bakeries.
On Hong Kong Island there is also a 3’6” gauge tram network that spans 13 km, running basically east - west, across the northern end of the island. This system has been running double deck trams since 1912, the system initially had single deck trams when it was opened in 1904. It is a flat price fare, you pay the same price to travel one stop, or if you travel from the beginning of the network to the end of the network. There are 120 stops along the route, and the end to end journey has a travel time of around 90 - 100 minutes.
(Kennedy Town - last stop at Western end, and Shau Kei Wan - last stop Eastern end)
